FAQ

  • How can I decide if coaching or counseling is the right fit?

Louisville-based Dr. Jan Anderson, PsyD, LPCC, offers a complimentary 15‑minute phone consultation to clarify your goals and assess fit before booking your first session.

  • What are your session fees and payment policy?

Sessions are $250/hour. Payments accepted via cash, Visa/Mastercard/Discover, HSA/FSA cards. Valid card required to hold appointments. No insurance accepted.

  • Do you accept insurance or Medicare?

No—I work without insurance to protect your privacy, avoid diagnosis labels, and keep control of your care focused on your goals.

  • What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?

Please give at least 24 hours' notice via call or text. Missed or late‑cancelled sessions incur the full session fee.

  • Where are your sessions held and how private is your office?

My Louisville office has no sign, no waiting room, and no back‑to‑back bookings. Virtual and in-person sessions available, all with complete privacy and discretion.

  • What types of clients do you work with?

I support individuals, couples, and families experiencing stress, estrangement, relationship challenges, life transitions, executive pressures, and more.

  • How do coaching and counseling differ?

Coaching is future-focused and active; counseling is deeper and broader. Both help you feel and function better—but coaching emphasizes actionable progress in a shorter timeframe.

  • When are you available?

Books Mon–Fri 9 AM–5 PM, Sat 9 AM–3 PM, Sun 11 AM–3 PM. I offer flexibility and responsiveness for scheduling needs.

  • What therapeutic approaches do you use?

I integrate research-based therapies—including cognitive behavioral, solution-focused, and emotionally focused techniques—with coaching strategies rooted in motivation science and behavior change. It’s a unique approach I call Counseling with a Coaching Edge.

  • Can I book a session online?

Yes. You can start with a complimentary 15-minute phone consultation by calling or texting 502-426-1616. We’ll decide if we’re a good fit and tailor the next steps to your goals.

  • What if I’m struggling with estrangement from my adult child?

I specialize in helping parents navigate the pain of estrangement with clarity and compassion. Together, we’ll explore what’s possible—whether you’re in low contact or no contact—and build strategies that support your healing and, if appropriate, reconnection.

  • I’m a successful professional—but I feel stuck. Can therapy help?

Absolutely. I work with high-achieving professionals who appear successful on the outside but feel overwhelmed, empty, or disconnected inside. Therapy or coaching can help you break through burnout, rebuild resilience, and realign your personal and professional life.

  • Can you help with marriage or relationship stress?

Yes—I offer solution-focused couples counseling to help you improve communication, rebuild trust, and reconnect with your partner. Especially for high-performing couples, I understand the unique stressors that can strain even strong relationships.

  • How long will I need to be in therapy or coaching?

That depends on your goals. Some clients see meaningful changes in just a few sessions; others choose to work longer-term. We’ll tailor the pace and depth to fit your life—not the other way around.

  • How do I know if I’m burned out or just stressed?

High performers often normalize stress—but burnout feels different. If you're emotionally exhausted, disconnected, or losing motivation, it may be burnout. Coaching or therapy can help you recover and recalibrate.

  • Can therapy help me be a better leader?

Yes—self-awareness, emotional regulation, and relationship intelligence are core leadership skills. Therapy and coaching can help you lead with more clarity, confidence, and impact.

  • I’m successful, so why don’t I feel happy?

Many high-achievers reach their goals only to feel empty, isolated, or misaligned. Therapy helps unpack the disconnect and build a life that feels as good as it looks.

  • Is it possible to reconnect after years of estrangement?

Yes, but it depends on the situation. Healing starts with your own clarity, self-compassion, and readiness. Sometimes the path forward is reconnection—other times, it’s resolution without contact.

  • What should I say in a letter to my estranged child?

This is deeply personal—but clarity, responsibility, and respect are key. I help parents write thoughtful, emotionally grounded letters that open the door to healing—not more hurt.

  • Should I wait for my estranged child to contact me?

Not necessarily. Sometimes small, well-timed outreach can make a difference. I work with clients to evaluate readiness—yours and theirs—and craft intentional next steps.

  • Can couples therapy help if we’re not sure we want to stay together?

Yes. Couples therapy isn’t just for fixing—it’s also a space for clarity. Whether you’re rebuilding or deciding whether to part, therapy helps both partners feel heard and understood.

  • What if my partner won’t come to therapy?

You can still start. Individual therapy can help you shift patterns in the relationship, even if your partner isn’t ready to join. Many couples begin with one partner leading the way.
