Mind-Body Fitness Training

Dr. Jan’s personal and group training sessions will leave you feeling uplifted, energized and centered, both mentally and physically. Her comprehensive mind-body fitness program — not what you will find at your local gym or weight-loss center — includes practices that complement and balance each other, such as:

  • Yoga
  • Yoga Therapy for chronic conditions, injuries and illnesses
  • Mindfulness Meditation
  • Mindful Eating — how to eat less, enjoy food more, and make peace with food and your body
  • Zumba

Start now on the path toward:

  • Getting in shape and staying in shape
  • Getting unhealthy weight off for good
  • Enhancing your performance and enjoyment of activities you enjoy, such as sports, gym workouts, outdoor activities, dance and gardening

I am truly passionate about extending yoga to those that consider themselves the “yoga rejects” — particularly if, due to chronic conditions, injuries or illness, you do not fit easily or comfortably into a gym or fitness center yoga class. I am always gratified when many clients, after investing in a series of yoga therapy or personal training sessions, are surprised to find themselves now enjoying and benefitting from a yoga practice in a variety of settings.

Another yoga passion I enjoy is working with experienced yoga practitioners and teachers that want to deepen their experience of yoga in ways that are fresh, creative and compelling.

Rodney Yee, who inspired me to begin integrating the strengths from very different styles of yoga, has been the primary influence in how I practice and teach yoga. This integrative approach to yoga feels more balanced, tends to produce better results and keeps my yoga fresh, creative and compelling. I also admire Rodney’s intuition and creativity in working with each and every student — he doesn’t teach yoga, he teaches students — and he has taught me to do the same. We began a long association that continues to have a powerful influence on how I practice and teach yoga in a way that stays fresh, creative and compelling to me and my long-term students.

I am also passionate about dance workouts like Zumba that beautifully balance and complement the slow, controlled movements of yoga. It is yet another way to come into “the now,” lift your spirits (along with your heart rate and your derriere) with rhythmic movement to great music.

In 1988, I began what I must confess was an on-again, off-again “love-hate” relationship with meditation. Eventually, I made the startling discovery that I was learning the gentle art of how to be with myself — and other people — in a way that is more present and connected. Recent research confirms my own experience: people who exhibit greater mindfulness tend to enjoy greater satisfaction and intimacy in relationships. They also deal with relationship stress more constructively — they experience a lower stress response during conflict and communicate better during conflicts. To provide my clients a simple, practical pathway to the mind-body benefits of meditation I developed and recorded Relax and Refresh: Brief Relaxations for Busy People, a CD of four guided relaxation meditations.

In my own experience of aging, I continue to be impressed and often astonished at yoga’s ability to slow down the aging process and help me manage it with more grace and equanimity. And from my own meditation practice, I was delighted to discover this relaxed, fully present “here and now” mind-set is available in many everyday activities of life, including eating. I began to notice that when I eat mindfully, I usually eat about half the amount I think I need and yet I feel more satisfied after the meal. To share this “secret weapon” of mindful eating with clients and students, I developed and recorded a guided experience of Mindful Eating Meditation: The Key to Eating Less and Enjoying Food More.
