 As I reflect on over twenty years of meditation practice, I sometimes wonder how I kept going.  It’s a hard practice for people with a highly developed Inner Pusher that gets really upset with sitting quietly in the present moment — “doing nothing.”  Sometimes my experience was simply twenty minutes spent with my Inner Critic.  And what could be sillier than a group of people meditating together - sitting there without saying anything – for twenty minutes?

How Yoga Can Wreck Your Body

Author William J. Broad chronicles his loss of faith in yoga as “a source of healing and never harm.” Broad, author of The Science of Yoga: The Risks and Rewards, initially found yoga helpful for a herniated disk in his lower back, but later hurt his back while doing a yoga pose.  Broad extensively quotes Glenn Black, a yoga teacher of nearly four decades, “the person to speak with if you want to know not about the virtues of yoga, but rather about the damage it can do.”

What If Being in the Present Moment Is the Worst Possible Place to Be?

The wise and howlingly funny Lily Tomlin was in Louisville recently and I got to enjoy firsthand an evening of her sharp insights and witty observations about the human condition. Pacing back and forth on the stage, recounting the myriad things she worries about, she suddenly said, “Have you heard of being in ‘the now?’ Well, what if being in the present moment is the worst possible place to be?”
