How to Get Started

Notes from Dr. Jan
My approach is simple: I start where you are in life — with what is already working — to help you get to the next level, whether it’s a lifestyle change or a relationship goal.  It is a mindful approach to change that can be refreshing as well as rewarding.

The people I encounter often say that things are going pretty well in their lives — they are successful in many ways. They want to make the most of what they’ve got and enjoy what they have. However, in some aspect of their lives they may feel like they’re missing out on something important or living life the hard way. They recognize that they can get where they’re going faster and better — and be able to stay there — by collaborating with a wellness and life strategy expert.

Research indicates that, more than techniques and methodologies, the most powerful dynamic for success is the strength of our working relationship. My intention is to hold the relationship carefully, in an open hand, during the entire process. My focus is on you and the only agenda is your best interest.

If a trusted friend or family member has referred you to me, you already have that person’s perspective as a guide. I also hope my website gives you a sense of whether we might be a good “fit” and helps you decide whether to schedule a brief complimentary telephone consultation to explore the possibilities of working together.  Contact Dr. Jan

You will notice I have grouped testimonials from my clients into those primarily interested in 1) personal growth, 2) health and wellness, and 3) those that were surprised to find both at the same time — primarily by combining elements of meditation and yoga with cognitive therapy. These approaches, known as mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), can be as effective as antidepressant medication and have also been found to be helpful for anxiety, relationship issues, sleep problems, problems with food and body image, and stress management.

What is mindfulness and how does it work? “Mindfulness” simply means paying attention, in a relaxed way, to what is happening right now. Practices that help us be in “the now” generally involve noticing your breathing and feeling the sensations in the body. Studies show that mindfulness is a powerful way to “take a break” from stressful thoughts and gain perspective before you react or respond. It helps you keep from ruminating about the past or dwelling on negative thoughts and can decrease anxiety about the future.

The good news is that there are no side effects to these approaches — in fact, you can be getting healthier and in better shape physically at the same time you are focusing on long-term success strategies and permanent solutions to important matters in your life.

A Note About Insurance:
Most people pay out-of-pocket for my counseling services — even if they have mental health benefits and know that our sessions are confidential, many clients prefer that their company not be aware that their mental health benefits are being used. Although I do not accept co-payments, I am a qualified out-of-network provider, so you may want to contact your insurance company and find out the reimbursement amount for out-of-network services. Most insurance companies pay 50-80% of my fee, after any deductible is met. If your diagnosis is one covered by your mental health benefits, you can pay out-of-pocket for my services and submit a claim to your insurance company for reimbursement.
